Gentle Care for Your Child's Teeth and Gums

Regular dental visits are just as important for children as they are for adults. Routine cleanings and check-ups are essential for promoting healthy oral development and maintaining their smile. These cleanings help remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria that can lead to cavities, gum disease, and persistent bad breath. Even though kids may struggle with brushing and flossing thoroughly at home, a kid-friendly hygienist can reach those tricky spots, ensuring their teeth stay clean and healthy.

After the cleaning, we’ll thoroughly examine your child’s overall oral health. This includes checking for emerging adult teeth, any potential dental issues, and tracking the health of their baby teeth. We’ll provide expert guidance on what to look for and offer helpful tips and tricks for maintaining their oral health at home, tailored to your child’s needs.

Routine pediatric teeth cleanings and exams help:

  • Keep baby teeth and emerging adult teeth in top condition.
  • Prevent gum disease and promote overall oral health.
  • Track oral health milestones and development.
  • Foster a positive relationship with the dentist.
  • Encourage kids to take charge of their dental care at home.
  • Establish lifelong healthy habits for their future.

What to Expect During Your Child’s Teeth Cleaning

Before your child’s check-up, we’ll carefully review their medical chart to pinpoint any existing issues or developing concerns. Depending on their age and dental history, we may take X-rays to get a clearer picture of their oral health. We’ll also ask about treatments like fluoride or sealants for growing adult teeth to help protect their smile. Throughout the appointment, our team will speak with your child in a fun, easy-to-understand way, making sure they feel at ease. We’ll also chat with them about how they feel about their teeth and whether they have any concerns they’d like to discuss.

Gum Health Is Just as Important as Teeth

The health of your child’s gums plays a big role in the overall health of their teeth. As your child’s permanent teeth begin to emerge, healthy gums are essential for preventing gum disease, which can affect children just as much as adults. Dr. Natasha will carefully check your child’s gums and offer tips on how to care for them at home, such as proper flossing techniques.

Removing Plaque & Tartar

Plaque is a sticky film that naturally forms on teeth as soon as they erupt. If not removed regularly, plaque can turn into tartar, which is much harder to remove. Plaque and tartar can cause tooth decay, especially around the gumline and between teeth. Our hygienist will use gentle tools to remove plaque and tartar from these difficult spots. After cleaning, Dr. Natasha may recommend a fluoride treatment to help strengthen your child’s enamel.

Watching for Developmental Milestones

Every child’s dental development is unique. Between 6 months and 6 years, your child will grow their first set of teeth, which they will lose as they grow into their permanent adult teeth. Dr. Natasha will carefully monitor these changes and take note of any developments that may need attention. If there are any delays or concerns, she’ll be sure to address them at the appropriate time.

How Much Does Pediatric Teeth Cleaning and Exam Cost in Toronto

Just like adult cleanings, routine pediatric teeth cleanings and exams are crucial for maintaining a child’s oral health and preventing future dental issues. Most insurance companies cover these checkups extensively, often at little to no cost to the patient (typically between $0 and $50 for those with insurance). Coverage is usually provided every 6 months, although certain exceptions may apply. If your child is without insurance, the cost generally ranges from $120 to $300 or more, particularly for first-time visits or those that occur after a long period without dental care.

The cost of treatment can vary depending on a few factors:

  • Your child’s current oral health
  • Whether new X-rays are needed
  • The necessity for fluoride treatments or sealants to protect emerging adult teeth
  • The time and resources required by the dental team
  • The equipment and materials needed for care

Keep in mind that it’s not possible to get an exact price over the phone; however, we’re happy to provide broad estimations after asking you some questions to learn more about your child’s situation. We can’t stress enough how important it is to schedule routine dental visits for your child as regular monitoring helps detect and prevent dental issues before they become painful (or expensive!) problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Similar to adults, children should visit the dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and checkup, though some may need to come in more frequently depending on their specific needs. In some cases, children might be advised to come in every 3 months. Regardless of the frequency, waiting longer than a year between visits is not recommended, as it can lead to the development of dental issues that are harder to treat.

Don’t wait if you have concerns about your child’s oral health. Early intervention is key to addressing potential issues before they become more serious. If you notice anything unusual with their teeth or gums, schedule a visit here as soon as possible.

Children may not always communicate dental pain effectively, so it’s important to watch for signs like:

  • Rubbing or holding their face or teeth.
  • Being sensitive about others touching their face or mouth.
  • Noticeable redness, swelling, or discolouration around their gums or cheeks.
  • Fever, especially if they have a toothache.
  • Avoiding hot or cold food and drinks.
  • Reluctance to eat chewy or hard foods.
  • Only chewing on one side of the mouth.
  • Irritability or changes in behaviour.

A typical dental cleaning for children lasts anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. However, appointments may take longer if your child is feeling anxious, has many questions, or needs extra time for reassurance.

  • Start cleaning your child’s teeth as soon as their first tooth appears, using age-appropriate toothpaste and a soft toothbrush.
  • Encourage your child to brush their teeth twice a day and floss once they’re old enough.
  • Fluoride treatments and fluoride-rich water are great for protecting their teeth.
  • Limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks like juice and pop, and save sweet snacks for special occasions.
  • Make brushing fun! Be a role model by brushing your own teeth regularly, too.

To allow the fluoride treatment to fully take effect, your child should avoid eating or drinking for at least 30 minutes after the treatment. This ensures the fluoride can be absorbed into their teeth, strengthening enamel and offering extra protection.

It’s recommended that children have their first dental visit by the age of 1 or within six months after their first tooth erupts. Early visits allow Dr. Natasha to monitor your child’s development and provide tips on brushing, teething, and diet.

After 3 years away from the dentist, I finally went in — and everyone was so kind. No shame, just support. They even taught me how to floss properly and gave me everything I need to get my teeth back on track.
