At What Age Should Kids Start Orthodontic Treatment in Toronto?

If you’ve ever watched your child’s smile change as their baby teeth fall out and permanent teeth come in, you know it can feel like organized chaos for a few years. Some parents wonder whether to step in early, while others assume they should wait until all the adult teeth have arrived. The truth is, the right time varies from child to child, and an early conversation can make a big difference in the long run.

At All Smiles Family Dental, we believe in helping parents feel informed and confident, not rushed or confused. Here’s what you need to know about timing when it comes to orthodontic care for kids.

The Magic Age Most Orthodontists Recommend

The Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic assessment by age 7. That might sound early, especially if your child still has a mouth full of baby teeth, but that’s actually the point. By age 7, enough permanent teeth have come in that an orthodontist can start to see how the bite is developing and whether any issues are on the horizon.

An early assessment doesn’t necessarily mean early treatment. For most kids, the answer after that first visit is simply “let’s keep an eye on things.” But for some, catching a problem early means simpler, less invasive treatment later.

Why Earlier Is Sometimes Better

There are certain orthodontic issues that respond much better to treatment while a child’s jaw is still growing. These include:

  • Crossbites, where upper and lower teeth don’t line up properly
  • Underbites, where the lower jaw juts forward
  • Severe crowding that may benefit from early space management
  • Habits like thumb sucking that are affecting jaw development
  • Significantly protruding front teeth that are more vulnerable to injury

In these cases, a phase of early treatment, can guide jaw growth and create a better environment for permanent teeth. This doesn’t always eliminate the need for braces later, but it can shorten treatment time and reduce complexity.

When It Makes Sense to Wait

For many children, there’s no advantage to starting treatment early. If the teeth and jaw are developing well, the best approach is simply to monitor things at regular checkups and begin orthodontic treatment once most or all of the permanent teeth are in, typically between ages 11 and 14.

Braces for kids are often started during these middle school years. At this stage, the permanent teeth are present, the jaw is still growing, and kids tend to respond well to treatment. It’s also a time when many of their peers are going through the same thing, which can make it feel much less daunting.

What About Braces vs. Other Options?

Traditional metal braces remain the most common choice for children and teens, and for good reason. They’re effective for a wide range of alignment issues and tend to be more durable for younger patients who may not be as consistent about wearing removable aligners.

Clear aligners like Invisalign do have a teen version, and they can be a good fit for older, more responsible kids. We’re always happy to walk through the pros and cons based on your child’s specific needs and maturity level.

What to Watch for as a Parent

You don’t need to be an expert to notice the early signs that a checkup might be worthwhile. Consider booking an orthodontic consultation if your child:

  • Has difficulty chewing or biting
  • Breathes through their mouth frequently
  • Has teeth that appear very crowded or widely spaced
  • Lost baby teeth very early or very late
  • Has a jaw that shifts, pops, or looks uneven
